Coucou ! Can you think of anything more French than complaining? Me either. Just ask a French person. If they don’t agree right away, they’ll probably complain about the stereotype. Of course, by doing so, they’ll be making my point for me.

Today, we’re exploring a story that’s been driving the French especially crazy. Fast fashion brand Shein and its arrival in Paris, fashion capital of the world.

On y va ?

HISTOIRE

Les Parisiens pètent un plomb

Let’s turn back the clocks to before the changement d'heure. C’est la fin d’octobre et les Parisiens étaient déjà prêts à péter un plomb. Parisians were already ready to blow a fuse.

Pourquoi ? Le géant de la fast-fashion chinoise, Shein. The company was moving forward with its first store outside of China direct dans le cœur de Paris. Encore pire, the store was planned inside BHV Le Marais, un grand magasin historique, juste en face de l'Hôtel de Ville.

Dans les yeux de beaucoup de monde, this was un affront. Shein’s environmental footprint and labor practices were already under fire. Now, the company was attempting to cozy up to la haute couture, prompting some established brands to pull their stock off the shelves in protest.

La réaction était violente. La ministre des Comptes publiques, Amélie de Montchalin, decided to take action rather than…well, pass a budget (France currently doesn’t have one). So, she staged a surprise customs inspection of every single Shein package at Charles de Gaulle airport. The final count of seized packages? Over 20,000.

Le message était clair. Shein n’était pas la bienvenue. Malgré tout, the store's opening went ahead.

But, in the Frenchest of plot twists, what did the first customers do? Oui, tu le sais déjà. Ils ont râlé. They complained.

Une citation que j'adore particulièrement, « Je suis déçu par les prix. Je crois que j'achèterai en ligne. »

"I'm disappointed by the prices. I think I'll just shop online."

DIALOGUE

GRAMMAIRE

Le langage SMS

While we’re on the topic of complaining, let me clue you into something I had major trouble understanding when I first got to France: le language SMS.

After a couple dates with my (now) girlfriend, I got a worrisome text: « Jpp. » J’en peux plus. Literally, I can't take it anymore. Thankfully for you, it was nothing I’d done. But, I did have a problem. How was I going to figure out texting in French?

Thankfully for you, we’ve got you covered with some of l’argot you might encounter while texting in French.
