Coucou !

Vous avez sûrement entendu parler du vol au Louvre, non ? They’re already calling it the heist of the century. But did you know the world’s most famous museum was also robbed almost exactly 100 years ago?

Today, we’re exploring the incredible true story of the theft of the Mona Lisa ou comme on dit en français, La Joconde.

On y va ?

HISTOIRE

Un vol par amour

Let’s turn back the clocks to 1911. Mille-neuf-cent-onze. Imaginez. La Joconde n’est pas encore devenue une icône. She’s just a quiet lady hanging on a wall at the Louvre. Franchement, most people couldn’t care less. La Joconde ? Bof.

Au moins, jusqu’au le 21 août. Un lundi. The museum was closed for maintenance, and France was about to wake up to one of its most embarrassing mornings ever.

Le coupable ? Vincenzo Peruggia. An Italian handyman who had actually worked at the Louvre. Un ancien employé. He knew the building. He knew the routines. Mais le plus important ? Il savait où se cacher.

The night before, he slept in a storage closet. The next morning, he walked into the Salon Carré, took the painting off the wall, slid it under his blouse, and calmly walked out of the museum.

Presque.

At the exit, the door was locked. Instead of panicking, Peruggia waited. When a plumber passed by, he pretended he was just another worker who’d lost his keys. In a moment of perfect irony, le plombier lui a ouvert la porte.

Pendant 24 heures, personne n’a rien remarqué. Staff assumed the painting was being photographed or cleaned. When they finally realized she was gone, c’était la panique totale. The Louvre shut down for a week. Borders were monitored. The police were so desperate they even questioned a young Pablo Picasso.

Et La Joconde ? She spent more than two years under Peruggia’s bed.

He was finally caught when he tried to sell her to an art dealer in Florence. He claimed he was a patriot, just trying to bring her home to Italy.

By the time she returned to Paris, La Joconde n’était plus juste un tableau.
Elle était devenue une icône.

DIALOGUE

Alex : Laisse-moi deviner. « Louvre » ?

Mustafa : Exactement. C'est tout à fait ça. « Louvre », tout simplement.

Alex : Mais non ! Pour de vrai ?

Mustafa : Eh oui ! C'est pas une blague.

GRAMMAIRE

Les traits d’union

In English, hyphens are optional. En français ? Ils s’appellent traits d’union and we use them everywhere.

You may not have realized it, but we even used several hyphens in today’s edition:

• 1911 : mille-neuf-cent-onze

• Laisse-moi (imperative form)

VOCABULAIRE

Ce qu’il faut retenir

• le vol : the theft

• La Joconde : the Mona Lisa

• le coupable : the guilty person

• j’en ai marre : “I’ve had enough”

• se moquer de : to make fun of
